Pro or CAD? Or both?

When speaking about similarities and differences between WIPL-D Pro and WIPL-D Pro CAD, we think of them as the two sides of the same coin. They are meant to do the same thing – to model and simulate an EM problem, and they both do it with excellence. However, there are slight differences.

WIPL-D Pro is “the older brother”. It is the first modeling engine that we made, and still the only simulation engine that all WIPL-D products rely on. It comes as the default part of the package, and allows detailed 3D modeling where every little piece of the structure can be manually meshed and arbitrarily changed. It does require slightly more time to model structures with Pro, but one can be sure that the meshing will be perfectly regular and just the way user himself defined it. Surface meshing is done together with the modeling, so the user can see exactly what kind of structure will be simulated.

WIPL-D Pro CAD first came as an importer of most popular CAD formats, with the aim of converting them into WIPL-D simulation-ready projects. It still fulfills this purpose, because it is only with WIPL-D Pro CAD that one can import STEP, IGES and other popular formats into WIPL-D. However, we’re past this function for a long time now. Nowadays, WIPL-D Pro CAD is both importing and modeling tool. Modeling is CAD-oriented, where every model is made very quickly and with solid bodies. The drawback, of course, is the meshing that can’t be completely influenced by the user, but only to certain degree.

So, what’s the best way to model in EM problems in WIPL-D? The answer depends on you, as the user, but also on the person you ask. There are users who prefer the speed and ease of design to the speed of the simulation itself, and those will opt for CAD. On the other hand, many WIPL-D users choose to use WIPL-D precise because of the ability to manually define mesh and reduce the model to only what’s really important, and work with parameterized models that are being run very fast – which is usually achieved with Pro.
